Hummingbird vines

Question
I just bought a couple of these vines on line. I got no instructions with them. They are dormant. Any suggestions on the proper way to plant them?

Answer
You didn't mention if they were potted or bare root. If potted, plant them in rich, loamy soil even with the top of the soil in the pot. If your soil is clay or sandy, dig the hole slightly bigger than the pot, carefully remove the plant from the pot by gently squeezing on the sides and tapping the bottom until it slides out. It's always best to water the pot thoroughly one hour before planting. Place the root ball in the hole and then backfill with a ric potting soil mixed with peat.

If the plant is bare-rooted, place the plant in a bucket of water 30 minutes prior to planting. Dig the hole deep enough so that the top of the soil is level with the bottom of the stem above the roots. Before placing the roots in the soil, mound the soil on the bottom and spread the roots over the mound. Backfill the soil in the same manner as described above.

After transplanting, water the soil thoroughly with a gentle spray. After about two weeks, go ahead and apply a small amount of fertilizer around the plant. Do this every 2 weeks until the plant is established.

One last thing. Make sure you plant the vines next to a trellis or fence for it to climb. When in bloom, they provide a beautiful backdrop for other plants.

I hope this information helps. Good luck, and enjoy the weekend.

Mike
