color of babies

Question
I hace 5 mature fish in my pond. 3 Koi and 2 goldfish. Last year I
discovered baby fish. 5 have survived but they are still a grayish
black color. Is this normal and do you know if they are goldfish
or Koi?

Answer
They are probably goldfish.  Goldfish breed more readily than koi.  Their babies are a brown/gray/blah color for 6 months to a few years.  Koi fry normally have some color almost from the beginning.  Another way to tell is to see if they have barbels under their mouth.  Koi do, and goldfish don't.  Koi and goldfish can interbreed so if your fish are all mature, that is a possibility (although rare).  Koi normally won't breed until over 6-12" while goldfish may breed at only 2.5" or so.  Enjoy your babies!
