summer

Question
Hi Nick,
I live in Hong Kong which is experiencing record summer temperatures very early this year. I have a balcony in the north east  which gets strong sun from 6 to 11.30 every morning. I have plants like- Dracaena, monstera African goosefoot, a few fern, ficus (Benjamina), Anthurium on the balcony. Which of these will be able to withstand direct sunlight?

Answer
Chandon, the fact that its morning sun, which is the cooler part of the day gives you an advantage; albeit the plants you listed prefer dappled shade, they should not stress with the direct sun in the morning. The afternoon sun is the hot, stifling heat that often burns foliage; so take your pick of your listed plants and don't concern yourself; even though you may feel the heat in the morning, the plants will fare just fine, for by the time they begin to feel the heat stress, the sun has gone to the other side and they well quickly cool back down.
