mandevilla vine

Question
we live in rotonda west, fla. what I would like to do is plant in the ground on either side of a queen plam and let them use the tree as a trellis it is a high tree with a good amount of sun.are they hardy here and is my plan feasible. thank you

Answer
Hi Allison, Mandevilla needs full sun, and a trellis or at least a fence to sprawl onto; a Queen Palm would be a poor choice and odds are it will fail as it gets further up the trunk because of the lack of Sun. Another paramount problem would be the lack of soil base because of the root system of the Queen Palm. Palms should be by themselves with a 4 foot circle around them containing nothing but soil.
