COCONUT PALM TREE

Question
i read where it is suggested that a palm in a pot be brought in when the temp. hit the 30's. mine is in half a wine barrel and approx. 3 feet out of the soil. it is beginning to brown. any suggestions for survival until summer?

Answer
Hi Cliff, Coconuts in a container are real iffy, they have an extensive roots system and really do not do well contained; I am inclined to think that it may be getting wet feet, when you water in a whiskey barrel, the water tends to hang at the bottom and the roots, being cramped, will get damaged from standing in this moisture. If it has to stay in the barrel, then I would lift it, and put about 3 inches of gravel along the bottom to help keep the roots from sitting and rotting in the wet soil. I am just guessing here, because you really didn't give me much info on how it was potted and how long it has been in the container etc. Nick
