Mussaenda- how severe can it be pruned?

Question
I have two pink Mussaenda that stand about 5ft. They are looking near death.. they both have one main trunk approx 3 1/2" dia. I am wondering how much I can trim them back and how? at a node above a node? does it matter?

thank you.

Answer
Hi Jane, go to the main trunk and begin scraping it,start at the top and when you finally see green then that is where you will prune, from that point up, for that is the area that is still viable, and new growth will emerge from side shoots at that point. Nick
