Pin Oak Tree - Ambrosia Beetles

Question
I have a huge pin oak tree which ws struck by lightning a few weeks ago. I had someone check the tree and was told it is being infested with ambrosia beetles. Is there something I can buy to spray on the tree to kill them?  I was toold there is something new called Onyx for this purpose.  If you recommend Onyx or something else, where can I purchase the products?  Should I paint the large area of exposed tree where lightning blew off the bark with something?  I want to save the tree, if possible. I also bought some Miracle Gro slow release fertilizer spikes with 15% nitrogen for the tree. Is it a good idea to use them?  The lightning strike goeso all of the way up and tree and there is about 2 feet of bark gone at the bottom for about 5 feet up, then the strike line gets thinner as it goes up the tree.  The tree is at least 50 years old. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Onyx is an insecticide for borer type beetles. It is expensive. I would highly recommend that you contact your local State Forestry agency and ask one of their Foresters to come look at the tree and see if they think it will survive. Most oaks can survive lightening strikes. An on the ground inspection can also give advice on cleaning the wound as well as recommendations on local insecticides for borers. These visits are free. Check you phone book under State agencies for the closest office to you OR look them up with your search engine under your State Forestry agency.
