pin oak dying

Question
young pin oak - purchased from nursery 2 years ago, trunk 4" , approximaltey 15' tall, last summer it did well.  this spring it was very late to bud out, and still leaves are not fully mature in size. I believe the problem is on the trunk where it appears that some tiny insect has burrowed it's way in leaving signs of possible saw dust trail that extends straight out of trunk, possibly 1/2 inch or smaller.

Answer
Dear Dawn, You obviously have borers, so I would spray the tree with borer spray.  I believe Fertilome makes a good one, but you can get that at your local garden center.  I am also concerned that the tree doesn't seem to be growing well.  When it was planted, was it wrapped in burlap?  Usually the burlap will rot but sometimes it doesn't.  If it was, you might be able to do a little digging and remove some of it which will help.  When it was planted, also was it planted at the same depth in the ground as it was in the pot?  Being planted too deep can cause a tree to fail.  If neither of these conditions apply, then I would just spray with the borer spray and fertilize the tree with 13-13-13 at the rate of two pounds for this tree and it should do better.  If it was planted improperly, I would perhaps even replant it.  I have had to do that in the past and it will help.  Hopefully, all the tree needs is the spray and fertilizer.  Good luck, Melissa
