Bradford Pear Transplant

Question
Hi,

I have a fairly young and seemingly healthy bradford pear that will have to be moved as it is soon to cause problems with our electric pole.

When is the best time to transplant this tree and how far do we plant..etc?  We'd really like to keep it.

Also, we have a small pine tree (unsure what type as it has grown from mulch that was put down before we bought our home) that will also need to be moved as it is about 12" from our house. haha  When and how do we move this one?  It is only about 3 feet high at present.

Thank you so much!

Answer
Both can be moved BUT-the best time to move them is in the late fall assuming you are in an area that the soil does not freeze early in the year. They can be moved now but will need to be watered through out the summer months. You will need to dig a large root/soil ball when you dig up the trees. The ball should be at least 3 feet across for the pear and about two feet for the pine. Dig the hole to put the trees in about twice the size of the root ball and fill the space with potting soil and mulch around the tree to protect it and help hold water.
