Removing a large bush

Question
We have a bush(not sure what kind it is) that we would like to remove and plant a smaller
bush(es) in its place.  It is planted next to our well (entire house water supply).  I have trimmed the branches as close to the ground as I can.  What can I use to kill the roots that won't effect our water?  We live in the midwest, if there is something I can apply now and replant something next spring would be OK.

Answer
The bush will resprout after you cut it. You will need to put a herbicide on the busk that will go into the root system and kill the roots. I would suggest Roundup. Roundup can either be sprayed on the new sprouts and they will take it down into the roots or recut the stems and paint the Roudup on the cut surfaces. Roundup will kill any greeen plant so do not get it on anything not wanting killed. It will not travel through the soil into the water supply since you will not be using a large amount and at a low concentration so the well is safe. Planting something else next year or within a day or two of application will be OK and give no problem from the herbicide.
