Live Oak Root shoots close to foundation

Question
Can we trench thru and remove a 3 foot radius around the trunk of a Live Oak tree in an effort to keep the roots and leaf debris from building up over our foundation line (where the bricks meet the concrete)?  We're currently getting pooling water in this area that is then coming into the house.  The tree is about 2 feet from the house, probably closer than would be normally recommended, but we'd like to keep it if possible and can come up with other less severe alternative if that's what's needed, but the thorough trenching seems like the best approach to us.
Thanks - Leane

Answer
I would strongly suggest transplanting the tree. Two feet is entirely too close for a live oak or for that matter any tree to grow near a house. IF it does get large and a wind blows it over the root system will take part of the foundation with it. I wold move the tree any landscape to take care of the water situation. Trenching will more than likely kill the tree.
