moss on soil

Question
I have had two sections of flower beds in front of my house and when we bought the house there was a small green moss around the edge. I have since changed the earth and added fertilizers and put plastic to stop the growth of weeds around my plants. It still keeps coming back every year. I have a water system but it only puts out small drops of water twice a week. I do not have the sun in this area all day only the morning so what can I do to stop this from coming back? I have racked it away and changed the earth, etc. I need help?

Answer
Hi Cheryl, Moss likes moist, shady, compacted and usually slightly acidic soil.  It's a nuisance, but not detrimental to your plants.  There are several products available to kill moss, most with high amounts of iron or copper.  I've also mixed bleach with water at 1 part bleach to 10 parts water and spot sprayed it with good results. A small amount of bleach will not hurt your shrubs, just don't spray the foliage of any desirable plants.  Jim
