Linden tree near septic tank and tile bed

Question
We are located in Southern Ontario. We just moved to a new property where a young Linden tree (4.5 inch diameter) is growing about 7 feet beside the septic tank at the corner of the leaching field. We read that Linden have deep roots. Would they still harm the septic system? Should we have the tree moved or cut down?

Answer
The general recommendation for linden tree would be 20 feet from a septic tank or lines.  I generally do not recommend removing trees but since it is a small tree I would lean toward removing it. There are chemicals that can be put into the lines to kill roots of trees in the septic lines and this would be an option if the tree is left.
