Fruitless purple plum

Question
I have a purple plum that has been in the ground for about 3 years.  It has feeder sprout roots coming up around the tree about 3 or 4 ft from the trunk.  I have been carefully removing them but am afraid I might damage the root that they are sprouting from. Now the root is about an inch or two in diameter and can I cut that root back, it's causing the bricks around it to rise  Thank you!

Answer
Yes you can cut the root that is causing the problem with out damaging the tree. It will grow back so every few years you will need to inspect the bricks and cut the root back again if there is a problem. The sprouts can be cut off at anytime without any damage to the tree.
