PURPLE PLUM DEAD BRANCHES

Question
I LIVE IN IL AND MY PURPLE PLUM HAS STARTED TO BLUM. BUT SOME OF THE BRANCHES THAT STARTED HAVE DIED. AND IT WAS A GOOD LOOKING TREE LAST YEAR SHOULD I CUT IT ALL OFF, BUT IF I DO THE TREE WILL LOOK FOOLISH IN SHAPE. ANY HELP THANKS!!

Answer
Todd,

I would recommend that you check the branches for armored scale. Look for bumps on the limbs that fall off when you run your hand down the branch. If they are present, spray the branches with a horticultural oil to suffocate this devastating pest.

You will need to prune off the dead branches. At the same time, try to reshape the tree to make it look more natural.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
