Wisconsin Weeping Willow

Question
Hello there. My parents have a Wisconsin weeping willow tree planted on the banks of their 1-acre pond. The tree is roughly 22 years old and appears to by dying. My dad treated the pond with more chemicals (Simazine & Carmex) than normal last fall and we're wondering if might be from that or maybe from some kind of disease. Is there still some hope for this once fabulous tree or something we can do to help it? By the way, this tree is in northern Indiana.

Answer
I would think either the simazine or the Karmex at higher than normal rates will damage the roots of the willow. You should see the damage on the side closest to the water where the herbicides were applied. There is really not anything that can be done  except hope the tree will have enough foliage on the other side of the crown away from the application to continue growing. Willow trees have the capability to survive and regrow if damaged and maybe it will over come the application. When ponds are sprayed asked about the effects of the herbicide on the adjacent trees before the application and if needed change to a herbicide that will not effect the trees.
