saving split oak tree

Question
tree-front
tree-front
I had two trees fall in my yard after last week's storm.  The neighbor's oak tree fell into my yard and hit my oak tree.  It seem to have cracked my oak. I was looking for advice on how to save it.  The tree cutters suggested to have it cut down, but I can't tell if they just want the business or if it really needs to be cut down. I really don't want to lose this tree and the shade in my yard.  See attached photos.  Thanks.

Answer
Do not cut it down. It does not look like a fatal injury. At the very worst I could see that the smaller fork may break off. But I think the wound will heal over fine. You may get some decay fungi damage but this will not kill the tree. I would Spray the area with an insecticide called Merit--this will prevent any borer type insect from entering the wound before it can heal. Check with your local garden type store for this product or another insecticide for borers.  I see no reason to cut it down now. IF and this is a slight chance a part of the tree dies you can prune that part off but the majority of the tree will be OK.
