Bradford Pear Split during Hurrican

Question
Hello. We have a Bradford pair tree that split during hurricane Irene over the weekend. The tree split about 4 feet from the ground and about 1/4 of the tree fell. There are now 2 decent sized "holes" on the tree trunk. Should we treat the open areas or leave them alone? We hope the rest of the tree survives and want to make sure it does become infested with insects or another other pests. Any information you can provide is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Answer
All that needs to be done is just remove any loose bark or wood from the wound and let the tree heal over by itself. Wound dressing paints tend to slow the healing process and should not be used. You will not have any problem with insects getting into the Bradford since these are not a problem with this species. You can take a saw and smooth the jagged edges of the break sand this will help heal faster. Beyond that just let it grow.
