inner leafless shrubbery

Question
I have had two gardenias, one wax myrtle, numerous photinias, and a savannah holly all lose or are losing all their "inner" leaves. The leaves are all on the outer part of the plants with respective blooms. The gardenias I thought might be due to not enough sun (and a few of the photinias) but the rest- it should not be happening. I have two other gardenia bushes- side by side-  one is fat and healthy, the other is losing its inner greenery (but will bloom, too). I live in zone 9-Houston. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Answer
Hi Barbara
could be two things, if they are close together they could be competing for moisture and nutrients, the root systems are interfereing with each other with the stronger one killing the other or it could be exposure to wind and sun is slightly diferent to each of them. ferst try to boost the weak ones with some fertilizer and see if that helps.
Good Luck  Larry  ;-)
