Pruning Weeping Cherry

Question
Mark,  We have a weeping cherry bush/tree that is 4 1/2 foot tall that we purchased two years ago.  It has done very nicely but is now very full and needs pruning.  We want it to grow taller.  When is the proper time and how should we select the branches to be cut off or cut back?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Its a weeping tree, so no amount of pruning will make it get taller. for it to grow taller, it has to grow from the trunk of the tree and up, as the branches are pointing downward. If you wanted a taller tree there, you would have had to plan for this, with weeping plants, there is no gaurentee of its height, all will be a bit different. I am guessing over time it will get taller, but how much is tough to say.

good luck

Mark
