Weeping Cherry

Question
I've read online that branches below the graft may grow straight up instead of weep.  When I look at my gree, the branches that are going straight up are above the graft.  Any ideas on why that has happened?  Can I prune in the spring and take them off?  I know that probably means I will have scars.  Thanks.

Answer
Kathleen,

It is true that the majority of the straight branches will ordinarily grow from below the graft, but you will occasionally get some growing above. These branches are actually the latent growth pattern of the tree.

You can absolutely prune these branches off this spring. I would also recommend thinning out the tree to improve air circulation and disease resistance. Any scars that are left will heal over and disappear in time.

Good luck,
