peony transplanting

Question
I don't know if you would consider a peony a shrub or perennial, but maybe you could help me.  I live in Elgin, IL, zone 5.  This weekend I divided and then transplanted 5 peonys.  Since they are done blooming, I am wondering if I should cut them back to ground level to encourage root growth for the rest of the season.  The stems and leaves are really wilty due to the division.  What should I do next?

Answer
Claudia,
While Peonies are a herbaceous perennial, I did some research and have concluded that it would be best to leave it be until the late fall- after the first frost, then you should prune it to within a few inches to the ground.
You can find out more about Peonies at www.aboutpeony.com.
In the meantime, make sure to keep it watered to avoid drought stress.
Good luck.
