Manhattan Euonymous

Question
Our Manhattan Euonymous is big and tall i.e. 10-12 ft. tall and about the same size around. It is taking over! ha! I need to cut it back considerably. When is the best time to cut it back and how much can I cut it? Thank you for your help. We live in Knoxville in East Tennessee if you need that information.

Answer
Paul,

Euonymus is one of the broad leaf evergreens that can be cut back drastically (down to 6- 8 inches off the ground) without killing it. If you want to do this type of rejuvenation pruning, I would recommend doing it now (mid Feb. to mid April). It may take a few years to regrow to a decent size, so be patient and give it a little extra care.

Good luck.
