english laurels

Question
We moved into a new house 2 years ago, and had the front landscaped. Six 6' laurels were planted next to the house about 3 feet apart. They looked fine when they were planted, but now they have a yellowed appearance and a sticky feel to them. Is this insect infestation and can they by saved?

Answer
Dianne,

I would check the undersides of the leaves and branches for Aphids. These insects will suck out the juices of the plant and excrete a sticky substance called honeydew. Spray them with horticultural soap and oil and fertilize the plants to help speed recovery.

Good luck,
