hi, problem: I have a buried line only about 20" deep & want to plant  Rose of Sharons very close to it. Do they get too deep rooted, & if so, what would you recommend? I am in Utah- zone 6- quite shady area against house- want something up to 12' with FLOWERS !!! Fragrant would be real bonus !!!!  thanks

You don't say what type of line this is, but I'm guessing that it's electric?

Any shrub that grows up to 12 feet could cause problems with this line - the roots will definitely go down more than 20 inches and of course they will also spread.

I really wouldn't recommend planting anything close to the line.  It would be safer if you can plant about 3 feet away from it.
