Hello,I recently got a little...

Question
Hello,
I recently got a little minature rose bush as a present, and don't want it to die as most of my plants do. I'm not sure the exact type, but its very small, the pot is about 8cm in diameter and the plant is about 20cm tall, with 3/4 dark red buds and dark green foliage. Both the buds and the leaves are really small, so i thnk its some kind of minature.Any help with the general care of it would be appreciated.( i live in belfast, n.ireland, but have the plant indoors)
Thanx!

Answer
sorry to take so long to respond. my internet has been down a couple of days now.
buy an inexpensive book(sunset, ortho, etc.) on rose care at your local garden center/nursery. quiz them on rose care in your area while there.
remove flowers after they start to fade by pruning back to the 1st 5-leaf branch or below. new red growth(flower production) will appear soon from this spot. there are many type roses so care also depends on which type you have - grandiflora, hybrid tea, floribunda, miniature, climber, old english, hedge, groundcover, etc.
wait till danger of  frost disappears  & then remove the rose from the pot and plant it in the ground. or remove it from the pot, remove some of the old dirt, replace it into the pot, and start fertilizing it. roses like lots of sunlite.
treat it like all other tropical plants. water by weight. put a saucer under the pot. water and let the plant sit in the excess water for 5-10 minutes.  after that time pour off any excess water in the saucer.  pick up the pot.  it should feel heavy.  don't water again until it feels considerably lighter in weight.  outdoors in a pot check the plant everyday. indoors check it every 5-10 days.  watering frequency depends on many factors(sun exposure, wind, day temps, etc.).the timing of what needs to be done to your roses depends on where you live. i'm in southern NJ, USA.
good luck
