growing roses indoors

Question
i live in juneau, alaska where we don.t get much sun and the summer months are very short and the winter it is very cold. i bought a rose plant at a nursery plant this summer. It bloomed very well this summer. i have it in a pot. Can i move it indoors and what temperature will it survive indoors?Or if will not survive indoor do i need to cut it back and keep it in the garage?

Answer
Roses hate the high heat of homes and usually do very poorly even getting spider mites, dropping all their leaves etc. I would just treat the rose as if it were in the garden. Normally it would be going into winter dormancy now so I would place it in the garage. Don't cut it back until the spring so that if you get a nasty cold snap it has cane growth to die back from. Hybrid teas can take some freezing temperatures down to about minus 20 without any harm. The secret is to only give them about half a cup of water a month to keep them alive. Place the rose where it will get some light and then when it has dropped all the leaves off it doesn't matter where you put it as it doesn't need light anymore. Just make sure you bring it out into the sun about a month before you would put it outside ( after all danger of frost is past)That would be the time to prune it. Experts are now saying that a rose should be allowed to grow for three years before doing any pruning. This give the plant time to build up into a healthy bush. Hope this helps.
