rose pruning

Question
we live in northern California, delta hard soil between San Francisco and Sacramento, we have taken over care of Lincoln and similar roses. they were pruned high in january and they are 5-6' high. in the interim we had 70s for 2 wks, and there is significant new growth at the low level and 3 inch red growth to the top. how should I prune, and when. thank you!

Answer
In your area you can prune them right now if you like. Because they are growing so well you could cut them right back to about 18 inches tall. If you like them to be tall bushes then only cut them back to 24 inches. Most roses in your area will grow up again to 5 or 6 feet tall even after pruning. It is the low level growth that is the most important the top can be cut back but the lower canes will grow into tall growth and also flower. Pruning hybrid teas is simple, first cut the whole rose bush right across to the height you want to cut it back to. Then take out any dead or diseased canes. Fertilize the rose then place a mulch of any kind you can get in your area to keep the roots cool and the roses will be fine.
