Lady Banks

Question
When I bought my yellow lady banks it had many flowers all over it.  This will be
my 2nd year to have it and now there are no flowers.  The ends of the shoots all
wilt and die and the leaves are curling in on themselves.  It's well over 10 feet
tall and grows well, just no flowers.  What should I do?

Answer
Lady Banks blooms on second and third year wood. So the canes it makes this year will have to wait one or two years before it blooms. It is also a young rose and so will make new growth at the expense of flowering. Also the rose is telling you that it needs more water. I know that when a gardener waters they assume it will go deeper down but many times it doesn't and so the plant doesn't get enough moisture.  Here is something you can do to make sure it will get enough water. Buy a 3 foot length of PVC piping and if possible, drive it down alongside of the rose about 2 feet away from the base. Then when you water just fill up the pipe  a couple of times and this will go to the base of the roots. If you can't then simply wait until the water has soaked into the soil and then water again. A mulch all around the base will also help to keep the roots damper.
