Blooms Dont Last and Shatter

Question
QUESTION: We recently planted several roses in our new raised flower beds.  The roses look healthy and continue to bud and bloom, but the flowers only last a day or two and then shatter. We have other established roses and recently planted roses that don't have this problem, just the ones in the new beds.  Thanks.

ANSWER: If the problem is only with the roses planted in the new bed, then it is the roses that have a problem, not what you are doing. However I could probably give you a more accurate if I knew the name of the rose as some roses just don't last. It may also be a rose that likes to be in the shade in the hot sun. Also if the weather gets very hot, again some roses don't like it and their flowers will be either less petals or they will blow quickly. When a rose flower doesn't stay in bloom a long time, the problem can be in the roots. Rose bushes hate to be moved and if the soil falls away when planted, or they don't get enough water to keep the soil damp but not wet, then the flowers won't last. If all your new roses are different and not the same, then there could be a problem with what you put in the soil. As you can see I am guessing  as I really do need more information such as what did you put in the new hole, did you buy the roses from the same store etc etc. Wherever you got them from, if there is a problem with the bushes, the garden center should replace them for you.

QUESTION: Thanks!  It sounds liked it's the soil and perhaps the shock of transplant.  There are three different roses (Heirloom, Hot Cocoa and Star of the Republic) and they came from two different nurseries.  I used Miracle Grow Garden Soil which is a concentrated mix of sphagnum and composted chicken/cow manure. I'm not sure I mixed it with enough "plain dirt"! The roses are in full sun. We located in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area.  Thanks again.

Answer
I still think it is the shock of transplanting to another situation to grow in plus heat. Heirloom is a beautiful rose with a strong fragrance but the colour , in some areas, can turn in a few days to a muddy shade in full sun. Hot Cocoa is another interesting rose colour which again will do well for you but is also sensitive to sun, soil and fertilizer. These unusual rose colours can change from the original under different growing conditions. Star of the Republic is another winner and in your climate. Has no problems and is very vigorous and can grow to 8 feet tall. Water your new roses well and give them time to bounce back from being moved.
