getting wisteria to bloom

Question
Hello. We live in Northern Indiana, 30 miles south of the Michigan state line.  I have a wisteria vine that I planted 7 years ago.  It has never bloomed.  Can you help me? Do I need two plants .....male and female? When should it bloom  in northern Indiana?

I keep it trimmed back severely..........maybe too much?  I'd appreciate any help you can give me before I take the Round Up after it!  :)

Thank you,
Sue Schieler

Answer
Sue,
I have heard this story many times. You are certainly not alone in your frustration over non blooming Wisteria. Wisteria is one of those gardening mysteries that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I have seen small wisteria plants bloom in one year after planting.I have also seen Wisteria that just sits there and refuses to bloom year after year. What is the origination of your Wisteria? This seems to be the crux of the mystery. Where did yours come from? A nursery,a relatives garden, unknown source? I am finding that the best results come from nursery or a reliable source where you know the plant has bloomed before or the same stock of plant has a good bloom rate. Also, there are different kinds of Wisteria.Perhaps the type you are trying to grow is not a good one for your area.Sometimes Wisteria is produced elsewhere and is brought to a different area where it's success rate is not favorable. So I would look into that. And if you like Wisteria, try a nursery locally that has a good success rate with theirs, and also a guarantee would be the way to go.
