dividing perennials

Question
Can I divide perennials (dont know what they are) by just digging up half the plant and replanting somewhere else. Should I do this after they bloom, before they bloom, spring, fall or when?

Answer
Hi Bill,
Thanx for your question.  Dig the whole plant up and separate it depending upon how much root material is available.  My rule of thumb is if there is a half cup of roots, there is enough to divide.  Divide your perennials once blooming has ceased and at least 30 days before the first frost.  I hope this helps.
Tom
