english garden

Question
I am maintaining an 8 year old English garden. The garden has not had any attention in 2-3 years. The weeds are so out of control, and I know I can not spray chemicals right know. I don抰 want to kill her perennials. Once winter comes what should I do thanks for your time Rebecca

Answer
Rebecca,
My specialty is garden reconstruction and it can be very challenging, especially during the growing season when you have to maintain what you fix AND continue reconstruction.I have been doing an English garden estate for about 4 years now. I had to do every single bed and trim lots of hedges.I just started by jumping in and pulling out all the plants I wanted to save and planted them in a temporary bed.I went from bed to bed at my own pace. The couple that I work for are very good to me and very grateful that I saved the garden. The previous owners had just randomly put down beds with very expensive plants but paid no attention to weed control. So I had to redo every bed by pulling out as many weeds as I could and then spraying them with weed killer. After that I used black plastic and mulch for weed control.I replanted the plants that were saved and added more as I went.Lots of perennials and bulbs need regular division and this helps by filling in beds so that weeds don't have room to grow. Everything has to eventually be done, but if you take it step by step using the correct method for the lowest maintenance garden possible you will eventually get there and it will be worth it!
