Black Eye susan

Question
We have grown black eye susans for years. This year the leaves are getting black spots on leaves, some leaves have turned totally black and curling up. What is my problem? Fungus? How do I treat this problem?

Answer
Hi Richard,
Thanx for your question.  It sounds like you have a fungal problem.  Black-eyed Susans seldom have problems but when they do, fungus is one of the problems.  Fungus occurs when the plants are too crowded, not enough air flow and/or too much moisture on the leaves and stems.  If you're watering a lot, water at the base of the plant instead of overhead.  Use a fungicide available at your local nursery and follow the directions on the package.  I would also remove all of the dead leaves and any plants that are heavily infected.  Burn the plants.  Do not put them in the compost pile.  I hope this helps.
Tom
