Weeping Willow Insects

Question
I recently purchased a weeping willow tree.  First I think I over watered and the leaves turned yellow and fell off.  Now I have noticed clusters of tiny green what appears to be bugs on the top part of the leaves and ants are eating them. What could this be and how do I treat it?

Answer
Hi Donna,
Thanx for your question.  Sounds like your weeping willow got attacked by aphids.  Ants love them and some ants even herd them like cattle, feeding off of them from time to time.  You can control aphids by spraying them off with the garden hose, insecticidal soaps (which will also kill the beneficial ants) or letting the ants take care of them.  If the damage is too extensive I would try spraying the bugs off first and then as a last resort, use the insecticidal soap.  I hope this helps.
Tom
