HYDRANGEA - NO BLOOM

Question
I PLANTED 4 HYDRANGEAS LAST YEAR THAT WERE BEAUTIFUL.  i DID NOT CUT BACK THE OLD WOOD AND THIS YEAR ALL I HAVE IS A GREEN TREE.  I HAD READ TO PLANT IT IN PARTIAL SUN TO SHADE. IS THIS CORRECT?  ALSO I LIVE IN ZONE 4 (NEW HAMPSHIRE)

Answer
Hi Kim,
Thanx for your question.  Planting in partial shade for hydrangeas only applies to parts of the country where it gets really hot.  If I were planting hydrangeas in New England, I think they would need full sun.  That's why you're not getting blossoms.  Make sure that you do not give them too much nitrogen.  If you are fertilizing your lawn this will cause the shrubs to concentrate on green growth and none on blosssoming.  Put Miracid or some other nutrient from your nursery that has nutrients for acid-loving plants like rhododenron, hydrangea and azalea.  I hope this helps.
Tom
