buddleia plants

Question
WE purchased a butterfly bush in a planter. We would like to plant it in the ground. We are concerned about winterizing it. What help can you provide in this area.
We live in south new jersy near atlantic city.
Is it better to leave this plant in a pot and bring it into the garage in winter,or plant it in the ground, and cover it up with something to protect it from the winter
cold?
your advice would be appreciated.
thank you

Answer
Hi Dave,
Thanx for your question.  Your butterfly bush will do fine in the Atlantic City/South Jersey area.  It will die back in the winter but the roots won't die.  You can put a mulch of cypress or cedar chips around it about 4 inches deep and that will help keep the moisture in and make a safer environment for the shrub through the winter.  Your winters tend to be milder than winters in Zones 5 and 6 where the shrub is still said to be hardy.  I would not keep it in the pot.  Go ahead and transplant to an area that gets full sun.  Water once a week if you're not getting regular rain.  I hope this helps.
Tom
