Winter Flowering Plants

Grow varieties of winter flowering plants, and make your landscape a colorful one that everyone will adore. This article highlights some of the hardy varieties that will surely beautify your garden in winter.

Comes winter and there are hardly any plants that bloom for brightening up the yard. Indeed, gardening becomes very boring with the arrival of frost and cold days. But, what about selecting winter flowering plants to avoid a dull looking yard? Yes, you can certainly do something to make your flower garden lively during this time of the year. From flowering bulbs to evergreen shrubs and small trees, there are many options available for growing some in your garden.

Suitable Flowering Plant Varieties

Search for the ones that bloom in winter, and you will find a plethora of them. The only thing is to select those, which adapt well in your hardiness zone. Most of them can be maintained in zones 5 - 9. Besides this, if you are residing in gardening zone 7 - 9, they are perfect for planting outdoors.

Clematis: Available in different color shades, these plants are listed in the most popular flowering vines. They produce showy flowers, irrespective of the cold winter conditions. The ideal growth conditions are rich organic and aerated soil, supplemented with farmyard compost. You can grow clematis vines near garden trellis, fence, or walls.

Crocus: Indigenous to cold climatic regions, they are hardy, perennial flowering plants. Flower buds begin to develop in early fall, and they bloom heavily during winter. Based on the crocus species, flowers are developed in colors of white, yellowish orange, and purple. Propagated from crocus bulbs, they produce blooms within 4 - 6 months of plantation.

Camellias: These flowering plants for shade also grow well in winter, provided that they are protected from heavy frost. Growing these plants in pots is simple, but for outdoor plantation, grow them under large trees or near the fence. These evergreen shrubs grow well in slightly acidic, well-drained, loamy, and sandy soils.

Cyclamen: Contrary to other cultivars, they produce maximum blooms from December till April month. Choose a garden site that receives part shade, and has slightly alkaline soil. For healthy growth of these plants, make sure that you maintain cool temperature, ample water, and optimal air circulation.

Hellebores: Interesting facts about including them in landscape design are production of vibrant-colored blooms and beautiful foliage. Plant hellebores in organic, well-drained soil after making deep holes. These ornamental perennials are maintenance free and resistant to drought. In short, they grow luxuriantly with minimal care.

Luculia: Indigenous to the Himalayas, luculia tolerates low temperature, but not frost. Growing these plants is a challenge for hobbyists, but enjoying the sweet-scented, pink fall flowers is worth spending the effort. Provide favorable growth conditions (organic soil, moderate watering), and this evergreen shrub will produce blooms throughout the year.

Pieris Japonica: These are evergreen shrubs and bushes that bring something special in the winter season. The production of fragrant, white, or pink blooms by these plants marks the beginning of this season. Flowers are borne in clusters, and each one of them is large and bell-shaped. Grow them in partial shade to sunny areas, and add organic mulch to conserve soil moisture.

Snowdrops: They can be grown in gardening zones 3 - 9, where there is moist and fertile soil. The flowering stalk produces a single, snow white, pendulous flower. These bulb producing plants bloom late in the season. So, do not be surprised, if they do not bloom in early fall.

In addition, plant varieties suited for growing a winter garden include witch hazel, lenten rose, flowering quince, bergenia, rhododendrons, grevilleas, wintersweet, etc. Choose any of them, apply your gardening basics for growing them, and appreciate the spectacular view.
