Aster care

Question
I have begun to use a variety of asters in my landscaping. My questions are what type of soil do they prefer, wet or well drained and what additives (fertilizers) do I need to supply the ground with on annual basis to maintain?

Answer
Hi Randy,
Thanx for your question.  I am going to assume that you are speaking of perennial asters.  They're pretty tough customers and don't require a whole lot of care.  They will grow in all kinds of soils, just make sure the soil drains well and doesn't stay wet and soggy.  Side dress your asters in the late spring with well composted cow manure.  During periods of drought, water the plants with an inch of water or a drip line once a week.  Deadheading (removing spent blooms) sometimes urges the plant to keep blooming in the fall.  I hope this helps.
Tom
