Question
My plants have been in the ground for 3 years.  I was told they were continuous bloomers from June to Sept.  However, they only bloom once (quite nicely for about two weeks).  I have tried triple phosphate to promote blooms (doesn't work).  How do I get the continuous blooms?  Someone suggested after first bloom to cut plants back, but I'm afraid to try.  I always go in and cut the stem the flowers bloom on (also something someone suggested)

Answer
Hi Mike,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, the Stella d'Oros don't always keep blooming do they?  One way to keep some blooms is not to allow the flower to form a seed pod.  Once the plants starts forming its seed pods it thinks it has furthered its race and starts stopping the blooming process now that it is making seed to reproduce itself.  So, frequent deadheading will keep the plant blooming although not as big of a flush as the original.  They also have a tendency to bloom a little bit again about now until into September.  As you have discovered, all of the fertilizer in the world is not going to make more blooms.  Bottom line?  Keep removing the flowers so they can't make seed pods and you'll get more blooms.  I hope this helps.
Tom
