Calla lily leaves

Question
So we just bought a condo last July and we had these big green leaves growing out of the bark. Thinking they were just weeds we didn't do anything about them since we were gonna tear up the back yard this spring. I walked outside the other day and noticed the calla lilies bloomed. My only issue is the leaves are massive and growing like crazy. Can you trim back leaves and cut them without ruining the flowers. I am new to all of this and I don't know much about gardening.  I Need you help. Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Tiffany,
Thanx for your question.  The leaves of the calla lily gather energy from the sunlight to nourish itself and to store energy for the next season's growth and bloom.  To remove them while they are still vital and green would do harm to the whole plant in general.  I would not remove the leaves until they start to yellow when the plant begins to go dormant.  If there are a lot of callas that appear to be crowded, you can dig up the rhizomes in the fall and plant them in a more orderly fashion.  I hope this helps.
Tom
