Calla Lily

Question
I purchased 12 beautiful yellow calla lilies and potted them.  The flowers have started to turn green and droop and the leaves are getting a lighter color of green.  Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong?  Possibly not enough sunlight?

Answer
Yes, not enough light is certainly a possibility.  Like most flowering bulbs, they like full sun.  So try to get them in an area where they have as much sun as possible.

Another possibility may be overwatering.  Bulbs can be especially tricky with this, since even a little too much moisture rots the bulbs away.  Make sure your pot has good drainage.  After you water, be sure there's no water left standing in the saucer if the pot is sitting in one.  And make sure that at least the top 1" of soil is dry to the touch before watering again.

If you don't use a plant food each time you water, it would be a good idea to do that, as actively blooming plants really need this extra boost.  Miracle Grow works just fine.
