growing a magnolia bush in Iowa

Question
I live in SE Iowa, in a rural setting.
I would very much like to plant a Magnolia bush but have been told the saucer Magnolia may not winter well and that I should consider a star Magnolia.
I could plant it on the east or the west side of the house;  however the south side doesn't have as good drainage and I am told they do not like to be too wet.
There would be no shelter for it on the east or the west side of the house.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you.

Answer
Hi Diane,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, I would agree with Magnolia stellata (star magnolia) as a possibility.  It seems that the saucer magnolias have a propensity for blooming too early in the north (I even saw some complaints about this in the South.).  Magnolia acuminata or cucumber magnolia tree is good to zone 4, Magnolia kobus which is one of the earliest to flower but young trees do not or seldom flower.  I would also suggest that you contact your local office of the Iowa State University Cooperative Extension Service, horticultural agent. S/he will be able to put you in touch with your local Master Gardeners or s/he him/herself will be able to give you options that are perfect for your area.  I hope this helps.
Tom
