Calla Lily Seed Pods

Question
It is the middle of August & I live in South Bend IN. My calla has bloomed for the 1st time and has produced a rather large seed pod.  I have read that you are supposed to let the pod turn brown, remove it from the plant and plant the seeds.  Since we do not have enough time for the new seeds to sprout and grow -- how can I save the seeds for next year?  I would like to plant them some time after the 1st frost in 2012 by starting them in maybe Feb/Mar.  What advise can you give me?

Answer
Hi Janet,
Thanx for your question.  Allow the pod to dry and then place the pea-like seeds in a clean, dry, glass jar, cover it and store it in a dark, dry cool place until you are ready to plant.

When you are ready to plant, plant the seeds 1/2 inch deep in potting soil and keep warm and under lights.  Sprouting takes place in 10 or more days.  It will look like grass.  It needs strong light, preferably from 40w shop lights suspended 8 inches above.  Window sill light from the sun will not do.  I've tried it.  When the plants are large enough to handle, plant in separate cells.  Plant out in a large urn, pot or in the ground after the last frost and when ground temps are 65癋 or higher.  I hope this helps.
Tom
