Oncidium sweet sugar

Question
Just bought this Oncidium sweet sugar and I'm not sure if the green foliage should be sticking out of the soil so much! There like big bulbs and and this mixture looks like fine bark grinded down.  Should I replant this orchid in the orchid bark and should I purchase a pot that has the holes in them before replanting? Thank you!

Answer
The green foliage should not be in the potting mix.  The foliage originates at the top of the pseudobulbs.  The pseudobulbs are rooted in the potting mix.  The answer to your two questions is "yes".  Orchids should best be repotted each year in fresh orchid potting mix.  Best time to do this is when there are new growths emerging from the base of the pseudobulbs. The pots should always have several holes in them to allow air to pass through the potting mix. Do not allow the pot to stand in water.
