replanting a Miltassia, C. M. Fitch Izumi

Question
Hi, my plant has a spike right now. It is growing horizontally in both directions extending roots out from the new growth and has really needed to be repotted for some time. I need to know where I should cut or break away the plant from the mother plant and should I use soaked orchid bark again in an orchid pot?  Thank you so much!

Answer
Congratulations on growing your plant so well.  I would cut the plant in the middle so you have two plants, each with a growing point from which the new roots are emerging. Allow enough room in each pot for another year's growth.  Be careful to minimize damage to the new roots as you repot.  Use fresh orchid potting mix when you repot and soak the frsh potting mix for a couple of hours before use.  Stake the new growth so it begins to grow more vertically.  By repotting now, you risk losing the flower spike, but by using a damp mix you minimize the liklihood that this will happen. Better to have a longer term view here and repot the plant now so its new roots get established in fresh orchid potting mix.
