Phal -lots of leaves, no flowers

Question
HiJim,

I have 2 phalaenopsis that have gone crazy and have 10-12 big (8-9 inch) leaves.  The roots above the soil are amazing, but all this and still no flowers.  I had great leaf growth last year, about 4-5 of the leaves I speak of, and the rest this year.  Am I being impatient or is this an indication I'm doing something wrong.  Any thoughts are helpful, thanks.
Sharman

Answer
Hi Sharman,

You're doing a great job in growing leaves!!!  (grin)  Actually, you are probably doing a fantastic job in caring for them.

It may be a little late but here is something you might try.  Expose them to night temperatures around 55F for about 3 weeks then back up to the temperature you had been growing them at.  Many orchids need some prodding such as slightly lower night temperatures to start the bloom cycle.  This is usually done in mid to late fall with a bloom stem appearing in early to mid winter.

Phalaenopsis bloom once a year so if they don't this year, you will have to be patient and continue to care for them as you have been.

Hope this helps you get them to bloom.
