phal with rotten roots

Question
My phal's roots are all rotten, perhaps because of overwatering. Anyway, there's hardly any healthy roots now. I have repotted it. What's the chance of it's survival? And what should I do to nurture it to grow roots again?

Answer
Emily, thanks for the question.  Hopefully you have used a fir bark based orchid potting mix and soaked it well before using it, rinsed off the orchid roots and removed any dead ones prior to repotting.  It also should have been repotted into a plastic pot with lots of holes in the bottom.  If you have even one or two firm, healthy roots, repotted it as described, and have some healthy leaves, it can recover. It may take a couple of months to generate new leaves and roots (and you may lose another leaf or two in the meantime due to root damage that served these leaves). Keep the watering to once per week.  Root damage is usually due to a degraded potting mix that retains too much water and blocks the flow of air to the roots. Even healthy orchid plants should be repotted annually after flowering to give new growth a boost.
