Leggy Phal

Question

Leggy Phal
Hello Wayne,

I have a few phals that have have grown quite leggy (too the point that they are not aesthetically appealing).

What should I do?  Can I cut some bottom roots off (most bottom roots are healthy) and repot so that the base of the orchid is flush with the growth media?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer
Rosemary, Thank you for the picture. I would not cut any of the roots. The best solution is to repot the plant so most, if not all, of the roots are in the pot. You will need to locate a plastic pot, with lots of drainage holes, into which the root mass will fit and then add the orchid potting mix.  Your plant is very healthy and could benefit from this repotting. Once you have accomplished that, future flower spikes should be staked upright as they expand and this will provide for a better display of the flowers when they emerge from buds.
