Phal keiki

Question
Hi there,

I was all excited when my phal started growing a keiki.  It grew three leaves (now 1-2 inches) but this week I noticed that what I thought was more leaves is actually one large flower bud.

What do I do?  There are no roots yet and unfortunately the part of the stalk above the keiki is turning brown.

Please help,
Teri

Answer
Teri, it is not unusual for the distal part of the flower spike to turn brown.  It also is not unusual for a keiki to form a flower bud which may or may not open.  Let the keiki grow on until roots form and are in active growth.  You can then separate it from the mother plant and pot it up.
